Concerto No. 1 in G major, K. 313

Taught by renowned flutist

Amy Porter

Porter has performed Mozart's first concerto for flute over twenty-two times – who better to discuss this impressive work? Mozart was only 22 when he wrote it, yet there are soaring melodies and rich contrasts that set it apart as one of the best in the repertoire.

Introduction

Porter shares a primary source in the form of a letter from Mozart's father, as well as how important it is to have an understanding of performance practice before tackling this concerto.

I. Allegro maestoso

Tempo, articulation, mood, and breathing are all critical to plan in this first movement, and Porter shares how she approaches it.

II. Adagio ma non troppo

The second movement requires that each phrase be treated very musically, and Porter talks about the special lift that staccato notes should have, as well.

III. Rondo: Tempo di Menuetto Moderato

For the third movement, Porter offers firsthand advice on appoggiaturas, as well as how to avoid common articulation pitfalls.

Cadenzas

Providing historical context, Porter outlines how to go about creating a cadenza for this stunning concerto.
