Poulenc

Flute Sonata

Taught by renowned flutist

Carol Wincenc

The sonata, crafted by Les Six composer Francis Poulenc, is simple at first glance but full of rich modal harmonies and alternating moods. Wincenc’s mentor, Jean-Pierre Rampal, elevated this piece to fame during his career, so she fills her course with one-of-a-kind insights and demonstrations.

Introduction

Wincenc describes how this piece was a favorite of her mentor, Jean-Pierre Rampal, and how its passion lends itself to countless opportunities for vocal expression.

I. Allegro malinconico

Following a basic ABA form and without a key signature, the first movement provides opportunities for many different characters, as well as testing our airspeed.

II. Cantilena: Assez lent

The second movement is steeped in the vocal tradition, starting with a quote from another song by Poulenc. Be sure to think about articulation, tone color, and dynamics.

III. Presto giocoso

Influenced by the cabaret music that filled the streets of Paris, the third movement is a fast-paced march demanding precise articulations and rich joyousness.
