Mark Sparks
With rhythmic outer movements and an inner lyrical movement, Martinu's only flute Sonata was premiered by Lois Scheafer 1949 in New York. Mark Sparks explores each movement in detail, expanding upon technique tips, practice strategies, and musicianship skills.
I. Allegro moderato
Sparks discusses the influence of Czech music on Martinu, as well as the proto-minimalism present within this work. He carefully progresses through the movement, discussing key points to watch for.
II. Adagio
Dark and enigmatic, the Adagio opens with a wandering motif and progresses into an array of fast notes.
III. Allegro poco moderato
Articulation is of prime importance in the third movement, where short, developed motifs present an energetic attitude.
