Introduction

Interestingly, the term 'partita' was not used until the middle of the 20th century. Rachel Brown goes into great detail to explain where this work fits in Bach's output, how to find the right edition, and how to use proper period performance technique.

I. Allemande

Rooted in traditional dances, the Allemande begins with a declamatory gesture followed by a running melody. Brown points out that Bach's fascination with numerology also makes a fascinating appearance.

II. Corrente

Occurring prominently in the histories of both France and Italy, this Corrente is partially inspired by Polish music, as well! Using comparisons to other works written around the same time, Brown shares alternate fingerings, practice tips, and a historical overview.

III. Sarabande

The Sarabande evokes intense emotions of beauty from an audience, despite its beginnings as a zesty, provocative dance. Brown demonstrates portions of the dance steps and compares it to other works in the repertoire.

IV. Bourrée angloise

What makes this bourrée English? Brown explores the influence of the hornpipe and numerous other pieces to try to get to an answer, and shares how that impacts our interpretation.
